Travel Delights

My co-contributor and I share the need to travel within our current jobs, though he much more than I. In fact, expect my own “Airport List” soon. At this point, my travel has been a very enjoyable component of work for the most part. I have traveled to parts of the country that I have never been; it hasn’t been too much of the back-to-back-to-back nature or too inconveniencing with the few times it has put me behind or taken up my weekend; it has provided me frequent flyer miles and equivalently, temporary subsidized living.

In fact, my last three trips were extremely well (Tempe, Arizona – Seattle, Washington – Tucson, Arizona). The events executed for the job went as well as could be expected, weather was phenomenal (I’m growing to really like “nice” weather), both trips to the Arizona casino left me with more casino $$$ than ever before, and I read an entire book – Blink by Malcolm Gladwell - for 5 hours straight on my first flight to Arizona. All of that was tempered by my eyesight being considerably weakened from the continuous reading which I could have alleviated with preparation (i.e. glasses) and slightly tempered by the 23 hours spent on a plane. But at the end of the day, my travel habits might throw me back into reading mode, which is by all means a good thing.

By the way, I’m writing this entry while on a Continental flight from Newark to New Orleans (conference). I am not flying first class and not ordering or drinking drambuie. From New Orleans I’m on my way to St. Louis (Final Four, Ervin Program, homies). From St. Louis I swoop south to Orlando (conference #2). Lastly, I complete the figure 8 and head back to Newark. Not including home, that’s two warm weathered bookends around the location of most critical mass – I am not complaining…Oh and in about 2 hours or so, I will be at Harrah’s New Orleans – the place where it all began.

Greatest Quote of All-Time 1.2

Yes, this is a throwback from the NBA All-Star Weekend but for anybody who saw it, it deserves to be on this website:

"It's time to let the birdman fly." - Chris Andersen, New Orleans Hornets PF, before he proceeded to miss 47 straight dunk attempts in the All-Star Slam Dunk Contest

(He should team up with Cash Money since he play in New Orleans.)

Semantics

Look back at my first entry: "first post"... "post"... "postings"... "posting-vehicle"... "musing."

Obviously, as evidenced by my use of "posting-vehicle" I did everything in my power to avoid using the b-word (blog). People really like this word?!?!? It looks and sounds plodding and heavy. Blog. Look at and say that! It's neither a pretty combination of letters in script nor a pleasant sound to the eardrum. I can't think of any word that I hate more with a few overused marketing terms that have been uttered one too many times at the workplace for the kid's liking (e.g. turnkey, organic).

That said, i'll likely use the word out of convention but I'll cringe every time I do so.

The Past

I once came across the quote: "Let your past be a place of reference, not residence." (That's very very very much a work-in-progress for the kid.)

I wonder what Mark McGwire thinks of that statement. I reckon he feels my mans from Minority Report, who said, "you know...when you dig up the past, all you do is get dirty."

Oh - As I have said time and time again, Salim Stoudamire is the best shooter in college basketball [period]

2041...

...supposedly the year that Social Security will go bankrupt.

Regardless of whether that estimate is absolutely correct or not is irrelevant - point is, Social Security can not and most importantly, should not, be relied on. Combine that with the abolition of race based scholarships, and folk(s), if you plan to live the typical life-span of the times and/or raise a family, I leave you with two pieces of advice:
  • Balance a plan/hustle to sufficiently fund your future against your prodigal youth*
  • "Make sure your kids is tight" (courtesy of my fellow generalist)

Interestingly enough, I don't plan to make the typical life-span (in fact, I expect to fall many years short), would set my odds of marriage at that of a single randomized Blackjack hand (if foreign, check out WizardOfOdds), yet I have both saved a healthy amount and not been too prodigal relative to my peers. Go Figure...

* Addendum to advice: There is an assumption here that people are prodigal in their youth, and possibly, that the young should be prodigal. To each his or her own. Personally, I say do it within subjective reason, but also keep in mind that, "too often, youth is wasted on the young." - G X Duncan

Over/Under G's

In honor of my boy's first post (taking into account his love of the block and lists), I've come up with all the things I think are overrated and underrated that start with G. Without further adieu-

Overrated:

  • Gran Turismo 4
  • Gambit
  • Garfield (seriously, have you ever laughed at a garfield comic? ever?)
  • Game, The
  • Georgia Tech's Basketball Team '04-'05 (although it pains me greatly to say so)
  • Grapes
  • Gin

Underrated:

  • Groundhog's Day (the movie)
  • Grand Puba
  • Good Eats (the tv show)
  • Gambling
  • Gangstarr
  • Green Lantern, DJ
  • Gabrielle Union
  • Goodie Mob's first two albums (Soul Food/Still Standing)
  • Ghostface Killah
  • Garden State (sdtk)
  • Grand Marnier

Exemplars:

  • Gladiator
  • Good News for People Who Like Bad News (Modest Mouse)
  • Gabriel Garcia Marquez
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  • Grey Goose
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • Google

We. Love. Lists.

I love lists. In fact, given my experience working in the publishing industry, I know that on the whole, the American public loves lists as well. Prepare for lists of all kinds to be prevalent...

I played video games, especially sports video games, ad nauseum as a youth. Then, I went to undergraduate school and for whatever reason (some may say "women") gave up the hobby. Remarkably, now that I am a working professional, its regained its spot as my top recreational activity. That fact is likely due to convenience, most bang for my buck, and then, sheer enjoyment. Which got me to musing...

Top 5 Most Innovative Video Games of Their Time (Non-Computer):
1. Tecmo Super Bowl (Nintendo)
1a. River City Ransom (Nintendo)
3. Tecmo Bowl (Nintendo)
4. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (I chose one as the figurehead) (PS2)
5. Madden 2005 (PS2)

Spring This Thing Into Motion...

Undoubtedly, deciding on my appropriate/”hot”/meaningful/[insert contemporary adjective here] first post has been my most difficult and nagging personal task of the year of the hand-over-fist (’05). So, take a little external motivation (thanks) + a little more personal frustration and you arrive at: a first post. I found that like with most things of this nature – its for you to decide what that nature is - that I simply first had “to do” (post) and hammer out future particular details later (find content for said postings). My fellow and founding G (Generalist)-Block contributor has conventionally referred to this posting-vehicle as a “brain-dump.” To that point, it was time to dump the hesitancy pacing back-and-forth in my brain regarding my first musing and actually muse…

And I figured what better time than the first days of Spring to spring this endeavor into motion. We’ll see how long this lasts as I’ve never been disciplined enough to keep such a thing in motion (sound familiar?). In the meantime, you get 7 straight days.

“Here’s to the Block…”

(This is the second time I wrote this posting from scratch. The first one was essentially “Lost” when the server timed out and didn’t go through to the web page. Having to rewrite something relatively important after you have just written it, is right up there on the frustration scale with not being able to get a tennis ball out of your pocket and packing/unpacking/moving.)

Loyalty

I want to apologize to my loyal readers (2 or less) for the extended break I've taken from updating my sparse head hole. But now I return to you, energized and renewed, fresh from North Carolina, Washington DC, and Chicago, IL (by the way, don't order drambuie in first class, for they will laugh at you).

I'm also planning on updating my airport post, so feel free to peruse at your leisure...

I also spent an ungodly amount money of amazon.com clearing off a number of things on my "wish list" including 100% of the dvd's mentioned: 1) rushmore special edition; 2) the simpsons - season 5; 3) malcolm x - special edition

Natures of your kind?

Natures of your kind, with strong, delicate senses, the soul-oriented, the dreamers, poets, lovers are almost always superior to us creatures of the mind. You take your being from your mothers. You live fully; you were endowed with the strength of love, the ability to feel. Whereas we creatures of reason, we don't live fully; we live in an arid land, even though we often seem to guide and rule you. Yours is the plenitude of life, the sap of the fruit, the garden of passion, the beautiful landscape of art. Your home is the earth; ours is the world of ideas. You are in danger of drowning in the world of the senses; ours is the danger of suffocating in an airless void. You are an artist; I am a thinker. You sleep at the mother's breast; I wake in the desert. For me the sun shines; for you the moon and the stars. - Narcissus

...thing i would rather do

Things I would rather do with my irs tax refund (about $700) than pay off credit card debt:
  • Buy a Bose Ipod SoundDock
  • Buy a Playstation Portable
  • Go to a casino and try to double my money up, then spend half on credit card debt and buy the first two things
  • Buy some cool lamps from ikea, because even with about 10 light sources in my dark apartment, I feel like I live in a cave.
  • Buy a really expensive rice cooker
  • Buy a really expensive coach messsenger bag
  • Buy 20 CD's (The Carter, Maze ft. Frankie Beverly, The Killers, Roy Ayers, etc.)
  • Buy 10 DVD's (Garden State, Malcolm X, Rushmore Special Edition)
  • Buy 3 Video Games (Gran Turismo 4 Sucks by the way...)
  • Buy the Simpsons (Season 5); The Wire (Season 1 & 2); Curb Your Enthusiasm (1-3); Deadwood (Season 1); Family Guy (1-3); Futurama (3-4)

Democracy

Man is so far from redemption that the only solution is to set ambition against ambition, and interest against interest. "If man were an angel, no government would be necessary" -- James Madison

"Don't hate the player, hate the mayor" -- Dead Prez
